This view shows the Germania Life Building at the corner of Fourth Avenue and 17th Street, a commercial block in the Union Square district of Manhattan. The Germania Life Insurance Company was founded by German-American merchants and drew on the city's large German community, which was especially visible in the neighborhoods around Union Square in the late 1800s. Fourth Avenue, now Park Avenue South, was then a busy thoroughfare of offices and businesses. The photoprint was issued by Irving Underhill, a New York publisher of views, and its record notes that some of its details come from an unverified caption card.
