The Clarendon Hotel stood at Fourth Avenue and East 18th Street, a corner of Manhattan near Union Square that was then a busy mix of hotels, shops, and traffic. This albumen stereograph, dated around 1870 in the catalog record, was made as one of a pair of nearly identical photographs that a stereoscope fused into a single three-dimensional view. Such cards were common parlor entertainment in the decades after the Civil War, and they offer a close look at the street life, storefronts, and architecture of the period. The catalog data is noted as unverified, so the exact date and photographer should be read with that caveat in mind.
