Standing at the corner of Fourth Avenue and 17th Street, the Guardian Life Building anchors one of the busiest intersections on the east edge of Union Square. Insurance companies in this period often built prominent headquarters in Manhattan's commercial core, using large street-front facades to project stability to policyholders. Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who registered this view for copyright, recorded many such commercial buildings in the 1910s. The print's date of 1918 or about 1919 places it near the end of the decade, when the streetscape around the square was filled with offices, shops and motor traffic.
