The title pairs a bank with a hotel, so this view likely shows two major Midtown buildings sharing a single street scene, an unusual combination for a photograph. The Hotel Biltmore, which opened in 1913 near Grand Central, was one of the grand hotels of its day, and photographs from the early 1920s often captured these new office and hotel towers as symbols of New York's rapid commercial growth. The print was made by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer known for architectural and street views, and its copyright registration shows it was issued commercially.
