The corner of William and Beaver Streets sits in the heart of the Financial District, a few blocks from the New York Stock Exchange, and this c1931 view records the City Bank Farmers Trust Company building there. The bank took its name from a 1929 merger of National City Bank with the Farmers' Loan and Trust Company, two institutions that had long shaped Wall Street lending. The photograph dates from the early Depression, when lower Manhattan's office towers were going up or filling with the business of finance. The print was made by Irving Underhill, a New York firm known for architectural photography, so it reflects how the city's commercial architecture was presented at the time.
