Few views of Manhattan's financial district from this period are as direct as this one, which shows the City Bank Farmers Trust Company buildings as the bank presented itself in the early Depression years. The company had been formed through the late 1920s consolidation of banking and trust interests tied to National City Bank, and its headquarters stood among the massive stone office blocks of lower Manhattan. The print was made by Irving Underhill, Inc., a New York commercial photography firm that recorded city architecture and then registered its images for copyright, so the picture reflects the commercial and civic image that corporations and architects wanted to project.
