Crowds jostling toward the doors of the Fourth National Bank at 20 Nassau Street in lower Manhattan are the subject of this wood engraving, which shows a bank run during the financial panic of 1873. The scene belongs to the weeks after the collapse of Jay Cooke & Company in September 1873, when fear that banks would fail sent depositors rushing to withdraw their savings. The engraving appeared in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on October 4, 1873, one of the weekly papers that relied on engravings like this to show readers events they could not see for themselves.
