West Street runs along the Hudson River shore on the western edge of Lower Manhattan, and this photochrom shows its piers and wharves at the turn of the twentieth century, when the waterfront was a busy hub of shipping and freight. The Detroit Photographic Co. made the picture for a catalog album kept in its office, and the company used the photochrom process, a color method that produced vivid tones by printing from several stone or plate impressions, to sell views of American cities and landscapes. The image gives a useful record of how the working harbor looked just before the city's later changes to its waterfront.
