The view follows the elevated railway as it crosses 110th Street in Manhattan, where iron trestles carried steam-hauled trains above the street traffic. Elevated lines like this one were built in the 1870s and 1880s to ease crowded surface routes, and they reshaped the avenues they ran over. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that Detroit Publishing Co. used to make many views of American cities around 1900. Its colors were built up from several stone lithographic plates, which gives the scene its soft, painted look. The print comes from an album the company assembled as a catalog for its own office.
