Looking down on Manhattan from above, this view around 1933 places the 59th Street, or Queensboro, Bridge in the far distance, its steel cantilevers spanning the East River toward Long Island City. The bridge opened in 1909 and was among the longest cantilever spans in the world at the time, carrying traffic between Midtown and Queens. By the early 1930s, the city's dense blocks of towers and rooftops, much of it built during the boom of the 1920s, made aerial views like this one a striking way to show how tightly the island was packed.
