This bird's-eye view looks down on the Waldorf Astoria, the hotel that opened on Park Avenue in 1931 after the older Waldorf and Astoria hotels on Fifth Avenue were torn down to make way for the Empire State Building. The new hotel's tall, setback tower with its Gothic-inspired ornament stood out among the midtown blocks of the period, and aerial views like this one show how the building dominated its neighborhood. The photograph is credited to Irving Underhill, a photographer known for city views of New York in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The record's date of about 1931 is approximate.
