Few hotel interiors of the early 1930s carried as much ambition as the Park Avenue foyer of the Waldorf-Astoria, shown here around 1933. The hotel had moved uptown to a new Park Avenue building at about 49th and 50th Streets in 1931, after the older Waldorf and Astoria hotels on Fifth Avenue at Thirty-fourth Street were demolished to make way for the Empire State Building. Designed by Schultze and Weaver in the Art Deco style, the building was meant to project luxury and confidence even as the Depression deepened. The caption information for this view is not fully confirmed, so details about the room should be checked against other sources.
