Few rooms in the Waldorf-Astoria were as well known as the Palm Garden, the dining room that this c1902 view records. The hotel had been created by joining the Waldorf and the Astoria, two neighboring Fifth Avenue hotels, under one management, and George C. Boldt, who ran the house, held the copyright on the photograph. Views like this one presented the hotel's formal interiors to the public, and the palms that gave the room its name suggest the lush, fashionable setting that drew New York's social set to dine there in the early twentieth century.
