Few hotel interiors of the period were photographed as often as the state apartments at the Waldorf-Astoria, and this view shows one of their reception rooms around 1902. The Waldorf had opened in 1893 and merged with the neighboring Astoria in 1897 under the management of George C. Boldt, whose copyright appears on the print, suggesting the images were tied to the hotel's own promotion. State apartments were the most lavish suites, furnished to impress wealthy guests and visiting dignitaries. The record comes from an older caption card, so its details are unverified.
