A Marie Antoinette room, decorated in the style of 18th-century French court interiors, is the focus of this view of the Waldorf-Astoria. The hotel opened in 1893 at Fifth Avenue and 33rd Street, built by the Astor family and run by George C. Boldt, whose name appears on the print as copyright holder. Its themed rooms were meant to impress guests with a sense of old European refinement, and the hotel became a favorite setting for society dinners and public events. The date of about 1902 comes from an unverified caption card, so it should be treated as approximate.
