The foyer shown here belongs to the Waldorf-Astoria's Park Avenue building, which opened in 1931 on the blocks between 49th and 50th Streets after the earlier hotel on Fifth Avenue was demolished to make way for the Empire State Building. The new hotel was a landmark of the Art Deco era, and its public rooms were designed to impress guests arriving from the avenue. The photograph is dated about 1933, a period when New York's grand hotels were still central to the city's social and business life. The record's date and subject notes come from an unverified caption card, so the exact year should be read as approximate.
