Few crossings in Manhattan were as recognizable from above as Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, and this bird's-eye view flattens the grid into a pattern of blocks, shadows, and traffic. The Empire State Building, completed in 1931, stands on the west side of Fifth Avenue just south of 34th Street, so it anchors the scene and reflects the skyscraper boom that reshaped Midtown in the 1920s and 1930s. The print is credited to Irving Underhill, whose name appears on the copyright record, and the July 27, 1937 date comes from an old caption card that has not been independently verified.
