Fifth Avenue at 33rd Street sat at the edge of the midtown shopping district in 1916, where the avenue's stores and office buildings were beginning to crowd out the older residential mansions. The caption card for this photograph dates it to about 1916 and notes automobiles among its subjects, which fits the period, when motor traffic was rapidly replacing horse-drawn carriages on the city's busiest thoroughfares. Because the record is based on an old caption card and its details are not fully verified, the image is best read as a snapshot of the street's everyday traffic and streetscape in the mid-1910s.
