Fifth Avenue at 53rd Street, looking north, is the setting here, with a Sunday crowd filling the sidewalks at midday around 1907. The card was issued by the H.C. White Company, a Vermont firm that produced stereographs for home viewers, whose paired images gave a street scene its sense of depth through a stereoscope. This stretch of Fifth Avenue was a well-known promenade for shoppers and strollers, so the scene shows how New Yorkers spent a weekend afternoon. The date is approximate, since the catalog data comes from an older caption card.
