Broadway running north from Canal Street gives this view its particular character, with the wide avenue stretching away from one of the busiest junctions in lower Manhattan. In the 1910s this stretch was a major commercial corridor, where streetcars, delivery wagons and early automobiles shared the roadway with pedestrians. The print was registered for copyright in March 1916, which suggests it was made as a commercial view of the city. The vehicles on the street are worth a close look, since they reflect a period when horse-drawn traffic was giving way to motor power.
