Few views of lower Manhattan from the 1870s look up Broadway from so high a vantage as this one, which is taken from the Western Union Telegraph Building and sweeps north over the avenue's crowded commercial blocks. Published by Currier & Ives in New York in 1875, the lithograph belongs to the firm's long run of city views, which were sold widely to a public eager to see the rapidly growing metropolis. It shows Broadway as a busy corridor of carriages, horsecars, and pedestrians, a useful record of how the street looked as the city expanded northward.
