Lower Broadway at No. 120 was home to the Equitable Life Assurance Society, the subject of this 1883 Currier & Ives lithograph. The insurer, a mutual company founded in 1859, occupied an office block designed by George B. Post and completed in 1870, which was noted for its fireproof construction and for passenger elevators that made upper floors practical for offices. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for its popular views of American life, issued the print as part of its "City of New York" series of commercial buildings.
