Rising above the Madison Square district, the New York Life Insurance Company Building was one of the city's major office towers of the late 1920s. Cass Gilbert designed the headquarters, which was completed in 1928 at Madison Avenue and East 26th Street, and its tall, ornamented shaft shows the period's enthusiasm for skyscrapers. The print dates to about 1929 and was issued by Browning Studios, a commercial photography firm, so its catalog-style view reflects the way such companies documented new buildings for clients and publications. The record's date and attributions are unverified, so the exact circumstances of the image are uncertain.
