Broadway's stretch between Union Square and Madison Square was already one of the busiest corridors in the city when this stereograph was made around 1892, and the card's title and subject tags point squarely at the crush of traffic that filled it. Stereo cards like this one were sold to viewers who slipped them into hand-held viewers to see depth in the street, so the image was built to show a crowded scene in three dimensions. Broadway in the early 1890s carried horse-drawn omnibuses, cable cars and pedestrians jostling for the same space, and the congestion recorded here reflects the rapid growth of New York as a commercial and transit hub.
