Union Square in Manhattan was a favored site for political rallies, and this engraving records a meeting there held for George B. McClellan during the 1864 presidential campaign. McClellan, a former Union general whom Lincoln had relieved of command in 1862, was the Democratic nominee that year, running against the incumbent Lincoln on a platform that called for negotiations to end the Civil War. The Illustrated London News printed the scene in its October 1, 1864 issue, giving British readers a look at American electioneering in the middle of the conflict.
