Union Square in Manhattan is the subject here, a plaza where Broadway and Fourth Avenue meet at the southern end of what is now the Flatiron district. The catalog notes mention flowers and peddlers, which fits the square's long role as a open-air market and gathering place for street vendors selling blossoms and produce. The Detroit Publishing Company, which commissioned this 8 by 10 inch glass plate around 1905, was known for hand-tinted and sharply detailed views of American cities and landscapes, so the image records a crowded, bustling urban scene at the turn of the twentieth century.
