Start with the setting: this view captures a flower seller's Easter display in Union Square, one of the busiest gathering points in turn-of-the-century Manhattan. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced these views of American cities and landscapes, made the image on a large glass dry plate, likely between 1900 and 1910. Peddlers working the park's paths sold blooms to churchgoers and strollers around the holiday, when potted lilies and cut flowers were in strong demand. The picture offers a close look at how street commerce and public parkland mixed in the city before the automobile reshaped those spaces.
