The engraving shows a patriotic rally in Union Square on April 11, 1863, as crowds gathered to mark the approaching second anniversary of the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Union Square was a common site for large wartime public meetings in Manhattan, and the scene conveys the density of the crowd and the civic energy of the city's Union supporters. *Harper's Weekly*, the nationally read illustrated newspaper, published the engraving in its April 25, 1863 issue, so it reflects how the war's home front was presented to readers across the North.
