The subject here is the officers of the 61st New York Infantry, posed together at Falmouth, Virginia, in April 1863. Falmouth sat across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg and served as the main Union camp area for the Army of the Potomac through the winter and spring of 1863, just before the Chancellorsville campaign. Officers often sat for group portraits like this one to mark their unit's identity and to send home to families, and photographers working in the camps made many such images. The print was made later than the exposure, so its surviving impression reflects the photographic process of its time as much as the moment it records.
