Officers of the 61st New York Infantry posed at Falmouth, Virginia, in April 1863, and the image records a regiment's leadership at a specific place and moment. Falmouth sits on the north bank of the Rappahannock River, across from Fredericksburg, where the Army of the Potomac had spent much of the winter in camp. The photograph was taken weeks before the Chancellorsville campaign, though the print itself was made later from the original negative. Its record in the Library of Congress's Civil War Photograph Collection makes it a useful view of how New York volunteer officers presented themselves during that period.
