Aboard the battleship U.S.S. New Hampshire, the wardroom mess shows the dining space where New York Naval Reserve officers ate together while training at sea. The New Hampshire, commissioned in 1908, was one of the Navy's newer battleships, and states' naval militias often used such ships for summer cruises that gave part-time sailors real shipboard experience. The photograph comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views of American places and daily life in the decades around 1900. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year of the picture is uncertain, but the setting reflects a period when the militia and the regular fleet worked closely together.
