Officers of the 80th New York Infantry, also known as the 20th New York State Militia, sat for this group portrait in 1863. The regiment's double designation reflects its origins in the state militia before it was mustered into federal service during the Civil War. The print is an albumen silver print, a process widely used in the 1860s, in which paper coated with egg white and silver salts produced sharp detail and a glossy surface. Officers often posed for studio portraits like this to send home or keep as keepsakes, so surviving images of this kind offer a useful window into the men who led volunteer units through the war.
