Sutler's huts and the camp of the 50th New York Engineers stand at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, in March 1864. Sutlers were civilian merchants licensed to sell tobacco, food, paper, and other small comforts to soldiers, and their stores became a familiar fixture of Army of the Potomac winter camps. The 50th New York Engineers spent much of its service building and repairing pontoon bridges and river crossings, work that kept the army moving along the Rappahannock. The scene reflects the period after the fall 1863 fighting at the station, when Union forces held the line and daily camp life took shape behind the front.
