The camp of the 50th New York Engineers sat near Rappahannock Station in Virginia, where the Union army had spent the winter of 1863–1864 holding the line along the river. The regiment was a engineering unit that built and repaired bridges, roads and fortifications, work that kept the Army of the Potomac supplied and mobile in the region. Rappahannock Station had changed hands in fighting the previous November, and the rebuilt crossings and earthworks were still part of daily life when this view was made in March 1864. The picture shows how a temporary wartime camp was laid out, with tents and work areas arranged around the men who maintained the army's river crossings.
