Rather than the full regiment, this picture shows only the adjutant and first sergeants of the 22d New York State Militia, the noncommissioned and staff men who ran a unit's paperwork, drill, and daily routine. The camp was near Harper's Ferry, Virginia, a town at the meeting of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers that changed hands several times during the war because of its rail and river crossings. The record dates the image to 1862, but the print itself was made later, so that date is approximate.
