The subject here is a unit of the 22nd New York State Militia, photographed in Virginia in 1861, though the record's location is only partly given. New York militia regiments were among the first Northern volunteers called to federal service after Fort Sumter in April 1861, and many were sent to camps around Washington and into northern Virginia. Photographs from that first year of the war are uncommon, because wet-plate cameras needed long exposures that made moving men hard to capture, so soldiers usually appear posed and still. The uniforms and equipment are worth a close look, since they show how militia dress and early war gear were still mixed together.
