The 8th New York State Militia, shown in June 1861 in front of a tent at Arlington, Virginia, was among the Northern volunteer units that crossed the Potomac that spring after Virginia voted to secede. Photographs from Mathew Brady's studio often documented such early camps, when militia companies still wore mixed uniforms and the war had not yet settled into routine. The caption on the original card is old and unverified, so details about the men and the exact camp site should be read with some caution.
