This group portrait shows members of the 22nd New York State Militia posed near Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in 1861, though the caption information for the image is unverified. The town had drawn national attention two years earlier when John Brown raided its federal armory, and in 1861 its location at the meeting of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers made it strategically important as Virginia's secession and the early campaigns unfolded. Photographs of militia and volunteer units from the war's first year are relatively uncommon, so group views like this one offer a glimpse of citizen soldiers before the hardships of the conflict set in.
