The Gardes Lafayette was a company in the 12th Regiment of the New York State Militia, and its name, which honors the French general who aided the American Revolution, suggests ties to the city's French community. Militia companies of this period were as much social clubs as fighting units. Their members often paid for showy uniforms and turned out for parades, funerals, and public ceremonies. The record dates the print to about November 1850, but that date and the publisher credited on an older catalog card, Nagel & Weingartner, are unverified and should be checked against other sources.
