Room 25 at 2-4 Prince Street is the setting here, where two women, whose names the caption records only with question marks, finish trousers in a cramped, dirty kitchen. Garments lie scattered across the floor, and a pale, anemic baby is minded by a neighbor's young child while the work goes on. The picture is attributed to Lewis Hine, who documented tenement homework for the National Child Labor Committee in the years before World War I. Its March 1912 date places it during his most active investigation of how piecework in the clothing trade pulled whole households, children included, into long hours at home.
