At Washington Irving High School in Manhattan in June 1916, Lewis Hine photographed the "Dance of the Children of the Sunshine" from Miss Mackay's pageant *Children of Sunshine and Shadow*. Hine spent much of the decade documenting working children for the National Child Labor Committee, and he turned his camera on this school performance. The sleeping girl, Ellen, in the foreground sets a quiet counterpoint to the dancers behind her. The picture shows how schools of the period used pageantry and movement for their students, a lighter subject than the factory and street scenes Hine is best known for.
