Park Row, the lower Manhattan street that ran past City Hall, was lined with newspaper offices, and here a young vendor is shown reading, with the papers she sells close at hand. Lewis Hine made the picture in July 1910 while documenting street trades for the National Child Labor Committee, a campaign to expose child labor and push for laws keeping children out of dangerous or exploitative work. The attribution to Hine rests on the print's provenance, and the image belongs to a larger series of his photographs of newsboys and newsgirls working the city's busy corners.
