Park Row in lower Manhattan was once one of the busiest newspaper corridors in the country, home to the offices of the World, the Tribune and other dailies that clustered near City Hall. A newsgirl, one of the young street sellers who hawked papers to commuters and pedestrians, stands out here as a figure of the city's working street life. Such children often sold papers for pennies a copy and were a familiar sight on busy avenues of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The scene captures how the press, traffic and crowds of the era shaped daily life along the street.
