Most views of Central Park show its open meadows or formal promenades, but this one looks into The Ramble, the deliberately wild woodland on the park's southern half. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux laid out the area in the 1860s as a tangle of winding footpaths, rock outcrops, and dense plantings, meant to give walkers the feeling of being far from the city. By the time this photograph was taken around 1905, the Ramble had become a favorite spot for birdwatchers and for visitors seeking shade and quiet. The record's note about caves refers to the rocky, shadowed hollows that give the landscape much of its character.
