The Ramble is the wooded, winding section of Central Park that Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux shaped as a deliberately natural landscape, with twisting footpaths, rock outcrops, and dense planting meant to make visitors feel far from the city. The caption card for this c1905 print lists "Caves" among its subject tags, pointing to the rocky hollows and shaded grottoes that give the area its character. Turn-of-the-century views like this one show how the park's picturesque design had matured by then, with trees grown to full height and the paths well used by walkers and birdwatchers. The record itself is based on an older caption card, so its details are worth checking against other sources.
