The Ramble is one of the most deliberately wild stretches of Central Park, a tangle of winding footpaths, rock outcroppings, and dense woodland that Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux shaped in the 1850s and 1860s to feel far removed from the city. This c1905 view, with its caption tracings for parks and caves, captures the area's appeal as a place to wander away from the grid of Manhattan streets. The record's date is approximate and drawn from an old caption card, so the exact year is uncertain. Still, the image reflects how New Yorkers of the early twentieth century used the park as a retreat for walking and nature.
