Central Park, laid out in the 1850s by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, is seen here from above, a vantage that shows how its winding paths, lawns and reservoirs sat in the middle of a grid of Manhattan streets. Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm that made and copyrighted this view around 1929, was known for stereographs and press photographs, and aerial shots like this one were then a novelty that let viewers grasp the park's scale at a glance. By the late 1920s the park was a major public refuge for a rapidly growing city, and the image records a landscape that had already become a defining feature of New York.
