Few New York squares are as tightly held as Gramercy Park, and this aerial view shows its enclosed green space from above, with the surrounding rows of townhouses pressed close on every side. Gramercy Park was laid out in 1831 by developer Samuel Ruggles and remains one of the city's few private parks, with access limited to adjoining property owners who hold keys to its iron fence. Underwood and Underwood, a New York firm known for stereographs and press photographs, made the picture, which dates to about the mid-1920s, when aerial views of the city were becoming newly common.
