From an elevated vantage point, this view shows Pennsylvania Station in Midtown Manhattan, the rail terminal that the Pennsylvania Railroad opened in 1910. McKim, Mead & White designed the building in the Beaux-Arts style, with a grand waiting room and a colonnaded facade along Seventh Avenue, and it was among the largest and most ambitious railroad stations of its era. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide range of American views, made the glass negative during the years when the station was new and was a prominent symbol of the city's rail travel. The station was demolished in the 1960s, so this photograph now preserves a record of its scale and the surrounding streets.
