Seen from the loggia above the floor, the waiting room at Pennsylvania Station sprawls beneath its vaulted ceiling, a vantage that shows how the space was meant to be taken in. The station opened in 1910, designed by McKim, Mead & White, and its main waiting room, modeled on the Roman Baths of Caracalla, was built to make rail travel feel like a grand public occasion. Made as a glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1920, the photograph captures the building before its demolition in the early 1960s, a loss that helped spur the historic preservation movement in New York City.
